Report from the NYC Anti-Surveillance Corps, MTA Division

The other night, some friends went and disabled a few of those pesky facial recognition cameras that the MTA has been putting up in subway stations around town. It was very easy, very quick, and very fun! These cameras are connected using Cat6 cables (which are low voltage and safe for anyone to cut). The cabling is encased in electrical conduit which is often connected together with connecting joints that can be opened with a screwdriver, so you don’t have to stand anywhere near the camera to disable it, just open up one of the connectors and cut. Yay!

This is just one way to mess with these cameras. We hope people try out others. A downside of this one is that the cameras are still intact and appear to be functional to passersby, which will still cause people to regulate their behavior. We believe that surveillance has a deadening psychological effect even on people who would never do anything illegal. Disable the cameras, clean up the city, keep everyone free – it’s a public service.

We’re not sure what the timeline is like for servicing the cams. They seem to be installed by an external contractor and the work has to be scheduled, so it’s conceivable that it could take a while or that surveillance mitigation efforts could keep pace with repair work in some locations.

It’s worth noting that we’re living through a historically specific surveillance boom. Of course authorities have always installed infrastructure to surveil and control people, but cameras weren’t always so ubiquitous and they don’t have to be ubiquitous forever. A few years ago, the MTA was a system that “supposedly” or ostensibly had security cameras installed in various locations, but it was so infrequent that it wasn’t really a thing people thought about, and many of them apparently didn’t work. We could get to that again! Sadly, we rarely see authorities willingly dismantle their own infrastructure, but it does fall into disrepair all the time – on its own or with help. <3

The purpose of this campaign is to make individuals aware of how their movements are being tracked around a city and to note where these cameras are being installed- The camera featured in this poster is a Hikvision DS 2CD2385FWD-1, however, most IP camera can be integrated into the RTCC software- It is worth noting that body cameras are also used in these systems. One popular company making equipment for RTCCs and police is Axon. Real Time Crime Centers, aka “The Center” is an egregious new territory of surveillance with terrifying modular options for privacy protections in addition to blurred lines between jurisdictions. It is popping up in cities all over the so called United States. In addition to variables on how and where this information is being stored and who has access to it, it is unclear what data is being collected beyond facial recognition and location tracking and how that technology plans to advance (and how quickly it will advance). It is also unclear how this data will be paired with Shotgun Detection Equipment (discrete microphones placed around cities that are constantly listening and also have ambiguous tech and privacy protections) to further collect data on individuals. Some systems are using generative AI to analyze information and alert authorities/ deploy officers to specific areas. There is reasonable concern that content generate by AI will be used against children as a way punishing/institutionalizing, will deepen racist, classist, transphobic policing and accelerate systemic rights violations.

The following is not connected to RTCC systems but a very real example of AI policing that validates speculation on how AI policing & RTCC could easily be used against children.

Let us not forget US administration has bullied public agencies to adopt artificial intelligence to the greatest extent possible through measures such as Executive Order 14179, Removing Barriers to American Leadership in Artificial Intelligence and Executive Order 14319, Preventing Woke AI in the Federal Government as well as the White House AI Action Plan.

Techno-Fascism is no longer based suspicion nor sci-fi diaster fantasy, rather, it is an atrocious attack against autonomy rapidly shaping our everyday lives and strengthening the power of the state. May more people than those on the fringes start fearing Police AI. This technology is currently and widely being used to track immigrants for kidnappings. This is heinous and alludes the probability that it will be used to capture anyone who the states deems undesirable. To what you will with these posters and may you do much more. do not try this at home! an ice pick is faster, quieter, and easier than you might think. volume up to hear it. wear gloves. you can do this! we were scared too, we didn’t know how ’til we tried, but it’s actually very basic. you don’t have to be an anarchist. we’re just regular people sick of watching nypd and ice brutalize people, watching crowds surround a vehicle and nobody doing anything. we’ve seen reports of it done recently in chicago, north carolina, and rochester, NY. come on NYC, this is the least we can do! scared to try in broad daylight? try it at night. as always, take the appropriate precautions to cover yourself and your tracks, e.g. see the shoe prints in the snow? don’t do that, toss the shoes if you do.

Support Elias Rodriguez and Casey Goonan: Call to Action – Oct 25th – Nov 1st

In commemoration of October 7th, the revolutionary Al-Aqsa Flood Operation, we are calling for a week of action for  pro-Palestinian political prisoners Elias Rodriguez and Casey Goonan.

The Palestinian Revolution, with dignity and pride, changed the course of history two years ago, and on this anniversary we must also stand up for those who took action. Former political prisoner Georges Abdallah said, “it is the duty of every revolutionary to respond with the means at their disposal” in his salute to Elias, noting that it is a duty for revolutionaries in the west to rise in response to genocide and in solidarity with the Resistance. Elias is accused of being such a figure and Casey has been convicted of fulfilling this duty.

Elias is accused of assassinating two zionist pigs in DC in solidarity with anti-colonial Resistance forces in West Asia fighting for a free Palestine. He is currently pre-trial and potentially facing the death penalty.

Casey Goonan is a political prisoner who has been convicted of torching a UC Berkeley pig vehicle in support of the pro-Palestine student movement and in support of the Palestinian Revolution. They were accused of a series of arsons in what was termed Operation Campus Flood. They were recently sentenced to almost 20 years in prison.

From October 25 through November 1st take action in support of our comrades. Direct actions, letter writing, wheat pasting, banner drops, or whatever you may have in your toolkit. Stand up for our comrades in the imperialist dungeons.

Vandalism of Police Vehicles near Bronx SRG HQ

Earlier this week, a group of activists vandalized a line of police vehicles near the Strategic Response Group’s Bronx headquarters. The SRG is a notorious NYPD unit, trained by “Israel” and responsible for the violent repression and daily brutalization of all New Yorkers; most notably including scores of Palestine solidarity protesters in the past 18 months and Black Lives Matter activists in 2020.

We slashed their tires, smashed their windows, and sprayed their vehicles’ insides with paint, making them virtually unusable. In isolation, this act of resistance won’t do much to stop the relentless onslaught of state violence and repression our communities are facing. The NYPD owns thousands of vehicles and other property that are ripe for the picking. Join us! It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3: SLASH, SMASH, SPRAY!

Bloc up, stay safe, use discretion, and act now! Marches are not enough. Target unsurveilled areas, conceal your identity, and leave no trail for them to follow. They can’t catch us all. Fuck the police and free Palestine!

Pig Snouts and Feet Scattered at 6th Precinct

6th precinct Manhattan – To honor the finest donut-eating pigs of the NYPD, we presented them with a generous gift of pig snouts and pig feet, scattered all over their car with a side of red paint. When they are not harassing the unhoused, beating up protestors, or shooting up subway stations, they are busy trading tips on genocide with their Zionist friends. Oh what would we do without these heroes! Maybe they deserve more gifts like these from more grateful New Yorkers?

Tires Punctured on Eight NYPD Cars at 88th Precinct

On Tuesday night [April 15] we punctured tires on 8 NYPD cars and sprayed “PIG” all over them at the 88th precinct right under their stupid noses. When the pigs are too complacent then collectively we are doing something wrong.

The 88th precinct is known for it’s tyrannical rule over both local community and new migrant neighbors. It famously collaborated with ICE during the 2020 George Floyd uprising by using ICE to guard their precinct building besieged by massive protests.

Five years later and where are we now? Every day another human being murdered in custody, through neglect or savage beatings. Robert Brooks and Messiah Nantwi. Five people have died at Rikers just this year. Two died in nyc holding cells just in the past month before even being arraigned.

Every day another neighbor disappeared into some far off prison, never to be seen again (look up CECOT). Every day another student kidnapped by ICE. Every day another community invaded by fascists demanding papers and hunting Black and Brown people for sport.

Every day another family incinerated by USA-made bombs in Palestine and Yemen.

When will it stop? We must come to a point where we realize that NOTHING WILL STOP if we don’t MAKE IT STOP. No amount of appealing to politicians, to cops, to institutions like Columbia, will help us. Let go of that, and we free ourselves.

The Empire must fall. Strike where you are, at whatever institution you can that upholds this whole stinking pile of dogshit. Every strike against the NYPD is a strike for communities both here and all over the world. May the strength of revolutionaries who have lived and died for liberation be with you.

BROOKLYN JAIL STOP WORK ORDER

Since NYC power brokers have decided that they would rather build jails to lock up New Yorkers than invest in our communities, we’ve decided to issue our own stop work order on the Brooklyn jail construction site.

We clogged the locks of construction site entrances with cement, smashed their card readers, and locked the gates at multiple locations operated by the jail’s concrete supplier, SRM.

The $3 billion Brooklyn jail is part of the city’s $16 billion borough-based jails plan. In addition to Brooklyn, new jails are being built in Manhattan, Queens, and The Bronx. The city is propagating the lie that in order to to close Rikers by 2027, it needs to open four new jails. Given that the city has already admitted that it can’t meet its legally mandated deadline, that the building plans for these new jails already anticipate overcrowding, and that the number of people arrested by the NYPD has doubled since 2020, we’re calling their bluff. More cages won’t close Rikers or make our communities safer. If they build it, we will burn it!

We act in solidarity with abolitionists inside and outside of prison walls, with those who riot against corrections officers and ICE, and with those trying to save their family members state-sanctioned premature death. Every struggle against racism, fascism, zionism, colonialism, xenophobia, and cisheteropatriarchy must also be a struggle against the carceral state.

To the city: decarcerate now, and build affordable housing instead. Do something that will actually benefit our communities.

To SRM Concrete: drop your contract for the borough-based jails now.

To our fellow New Yorkers: join us in action and make your voices heard. No new jails. No more deaths at the hands of the state.

A MESSAGE TO THE STUDENT INTIFADA:

Let us not dialogue with our persecutors.

In the words of Ghassan Kanafani, we must reject the “conversation between the sword and the neck.”

The footage you are viewing is contraband. It was smuggled out of Hind’s Hall and hidden from the NYPD in the band of a militant’s bra. Until now, the only footage to come out of the battle and raid was from the perspective of the pigs, but this footage is the worldview of the militant. We are releasing it in response to the latest wave of repression sweeping across amerika. The Student Intifada put the imperialist ruling class on its back foot. Echoes of 1968 and the threat of mother country militancy still loom over their heads—they remember the last time this kind of struggle erupted. They remember the last time youth in the metropole began to identify with the Third World guerrilla. The enemy is scared, and they should be. They’ve responded using every tactic of repression available to them, teetering on the edge of criminalizing all anti-zionist speech.

Yesterday, Columbia expelled another student for their alleged involvement in the Student Intifada. This is the first expulsion for alleged involvement in Hind’s Hall.
